ISI contributes to Safety 2026 World Conference

The Inclusive Society Institute (ISI) participated in the Safety 2026 World Conference, held in Cape Town from 1 to 4 September 2026.

 

The conference brought together policymakers, researchers, practitioners, civil society organisations and international partners to examine the complex and interconnected challenges affecting safety and wellbeing. Its programme focused on moving beyond diagnosis towards practical action, stronger collaboration and improved accountability.

 

In preparation for the conference, eight Thematic Working Groups were convened to consider key areas of safety: violence prevention, crime and social cohesion; safe work, transport and livelihoods; safe communities and urban design; mental health, substance use and wellbeing; child, youth and school safety; climate, environmental and disaster safety; digital safety and emerging harms; and injury care, rehabilitation and data systems.

 

The ISI played an important technical role in this process. It was responsible for compiling the deliberations and submissions arising from the eight working groups into a coherent series of technical reports. These reports identified the principal challenges, distilled the strategic conclusions emerging from the consultations and translated the discussions into proposed national actions and key messages.

 

The reports provided an evidence-informed foundation for the development of the Safety 2026 National Action Consensus Plan. In undertaking this work, the Institute sought to ensure that the breadth of contributions received through the working-group process was accurately and systematically reflected in the conference’s technical documentation.

 

The ISI also participated during the conference by hosting a networking stand in the Global Village. The stand provided an opportunity to engage delegates, exchange ideas and contribute to the wider discussions taking place alongside the formal conference programme.

 

The Institute’s involvement in Safety 2026 reflects its commitment to supporting inclusive policy development, strengthening cooperation across sectors and helping translate public dialogue into practical programmes of action.
